Progress Of Village Children’s Education In The Midst Of The Covid-19 Pandemic

Many school children in my village complain about online learning so far, especially children who are still in elementary school, this difficulty is not only felt by the children but also their parents who find it difficult to teach their children regarding the learning material given.Even after i repeatedly made observations in my village, not a few during class time they even gathered to play games and play together. That’s why here, i took the initiative to help elementary school children in my village to change their mindset that education is very important especially in the midst of condition like this, so that they are more enthusiastic about participating in online leraning at their respective schools. I will provide opportunities for them to join the learning class that i will open later.

The first step before i open the learning class i will make observations about something they need during online school so far and what subject matter they don’t understand so far. After that, here i will share a form about what things make them bored following the learning that has been done so far. So that it makes them prefer to play with their friend rather than take part learning at their school. Afther that, the form will also contain many questions about science to find out their level ability and knowledge during the implementation of online schools during this time. Below is one of the forms that i distributed to the children in my village.

Form Questions

After the observation was completed, it turned out that after i saw their respective answers, it was true that they answered more than 50 % of the questions that were uncorrect, even though the questions i asked were not so difficult, and there were only few children who were able to solve the questions  correctly and precisely. After seeing this, there were several plans that i thought of as a second step before the learning class was opened. The first thing i planned was to open a study class for them free of charge, because i want to really help them so that they still have sufficient knowledge even though the conditions are like this, they cant participate in the course activities because some children are economically disadvantaged which is inssufficient. I will make game-based learning media, because when i observed a lot of children gathered to play games, so i took the initiative to package the learning that i did later based on game. My third plan will focus on math subject that is less attractive and there are a lot elementary student in my village dont understand and have no interest learning this subject, i will turn math learning by packaging into Japanese-based math learning, this method i have read and understand when i was in junior hingh school because it was inspired  by the figure of Jerome Polin. And i think japanese-based mathematics learning is easy to understand, of course with higher level of dificulty because it also contains tricks to do math problems more easily and quickly. The fourth plan i will make a coin program prizes, the meaning is here to get their attention so that join to study class that ia am doing. The purpose of the coin prize program here, they will get the coins on condition, that they have a high value when i give a pretest in the middle of learning later and they can exchange the coins for the prize that i have prepared for them. Here are some documentation of the preparations that i did

Furthermore, after all the preparations were completed, the first step i took was to put up posters in some of their playgrounds as a form promotion of the learning class that i opened for free for them, in the posters it already contains a schedule for the implementation of the learning class and contains the whatsapp group link that i sent provide information to those who have joined. In fact, the poster received a positive response from elementary student in my village, many of whom wanted to join the learning class that i opened. This learning class was carried out online through zoom and some are offline meeting with notes keep using health protocol and get parental permission. When learning, i see their enthusiasm is actually very high to learn, they also understand the subject matter that i teach them with the concepts that i have provided, even they are also competing to collect coin prizes that they can exchange at the end of the lesson. They also use the intensive study group that i created to ask their school asigments that they dont understand so they get used to choosing to study first at home and the play when their assigments have been completed. Several mathematical methods what i teach include the sakamoto method, dot connection, building block connections, and others. On the sidelines of learning i also motivate them to always be enthusiastic in learning for their own future and provide guidance on how to behave properly and correctly when dealing with pandemic condition like today. At the time of learning they also get used to doing the pretest given according to their subject matters at school which is packaged in the form of games and continues to increase. They also feel happy because they can understand the subject matter easily, besides that they also always come to the place of time to take part in the learning that is being carried out. Here are some documentations during the learning process
